How My Journey to Cloth Began {Guest Post}

I have been a member of my oldest son's birth club group since right after his birth almost sixteen years ago. Crazy, right? Over the years, it has turned into a bunch of women sitting around in a virtual Starbucks chit-chatting over cyber lattes. About eight years ago one of those conversations was about reusable menstrual options. A few of the women mentioned using menstrual cups as well as cloth pads. Cloth pads?! I had no idea that was even a thing. I ended up ordering a menstrual cup, but I wasn't interested in trying cloth pads. Nope, not for me.  Then my younger son was born almost five years ago and I started using cloth diapers. I was all about cloth so I joined groups and Facebook pages, followed blogs and people on Twitter. Cloth diapers became an obsession and with that came exposure to more people who were also using cloth for themselves.

Here they were again, cloth pads. Nope, still not interested. Nope, nope, nope. Then a funny thing happened in October of 2013. I was asked to review Pink Lemonade Shop cloth menstrual pads on my blog. I couldn't get away from these cloth pads so I took a few days to think about it. I asked fellow cloth pad users and bloggers what they thought and finally I took the plunge. I agreed to a review.

During my review period (no pun intended), I found that I was surprised at how easy caring for cloth pads was and how much they hold. Other than never being much of a pad user, my concern had always been that cloth pads wouldn't be as absorbent as disposables and I quickly found that I was wrong. But the reason why I became hooked on cloth pads didn't really have anything to do with either of those things. Sure, they're great for the environment and the bank account, but I am now a cloth pad convert and addict because they're soft and pretty. Be honest, who loves that time of the month? I know that I don't, but if there is anything that I can do to make it a little more pleasant then I will, and that something turned out to be cloth pads. Pink Lemonade Shop pads to be specific.

Pink Lemonade Shop Frequently Asked Questions!

Last night we had a ton of fun chatting with some amazing women about cloth and Pink Lemonade Shop! There were some wonderful questions asked at our cloth chat party, so we thought it would be a good idea to have them posted here for easy and quick reference! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask below or to email us direct!

Q: How many cloth pads should I have so I don't have to wash them everyday of my period?
A: We suggest having 15-20 pads to get through a cycle, however it will really depend on the length of your cycle, your flow, and how frequently you change. Some like to wait until the end of their cycle to do pad laundry while others do pad laundry every other day!

Q: Can I wash them with cloth diapers?
A: You sure can, however, pads do not need as vigorous of a wash cycle as cloth diapers do, so we do not recommend bleach soaks or ’stripping’ your diapers with your pads. 

Q: How best to keep cloth pads from sliding all around the place?
A: We have been told my many that our pads do not move around while they are being worn, however if you find that yours are, we recommend wearing a more form fitting panty to keep it snug. 

Q: How do you treat stains?
A: Good old fashioned sun! Wash your pads as normal and then lay them flat in the sun! If the sun does not remove your stain, we carry Buncha Farmer’s Stain Removal Sticks that work wonders!

Q: Are your pads regulated by the FDA?
A: We sure are! Pink Lemonade Shop is proudly FDA compliant! 

Q: Do you have to prep cloth pads before use?
A: You do not! Pink Lemonade Shop pads are prepped, prewashed, and ready for you to use upon arrival!

Q: How long do Pink Lemonade pads last?
A: Pink Lemonade Shop pads last for years! Sue has some original PLS pads that are 8+ years old and still look nearly new!

Q: How long does it take for Pink Lemonade cloth pads to pay for themselves in savings?
A: One Pink Lemonade Shop pad replaces 75-100 disposables!

& one very specific question that we thought was a good one!

Q: I'm more concerned about what you do with your pads when the cloth diaper years are done...seems like it would be too small of a load to wash by themselves, plus do you save them all up if your period is 5+ days? Don't they get gross sitting that long before wash day? Makes sense to me to use them if you cloth diaper but what about after? (Asked by Sarah C)
A: Some women save their pad laundry to wash after their cycle has finished, there is no problem with leaving them in a wet bag. We always recommend that you pre-rinse your pads prior to putting them into your soiled storage container. If you pre-rinse your pads, you can wash your pads with any other laundry such as your regular clothing, or towels

Your Choice in Fabrics at Pink Lemonade Shop

Many of our lovely customers inquire about the fabrics that are used in the creation of our beautiful cloth menstrual pads. We offer a wide variety of choices in top fabrics and recommend that you try one of each for yourself to find out what fits your needs the best! 

 

Looking for incredible softness? Look no further than Minky. My #1 selling fabric will blow you away with its soft, silky feel. Minky is also a great wicking fabric, meaning it pulls moisture through the top to the core of the pad and away from you, and Vegan friendly. Minky is also almost 100% stain resistant.

Minky is 100% polyester, so if you’re looking for a natural fiber for the tops of your pads, this shouldn’t be your first choice.

Soft, Silky, and Luxurious! I offer OBV in both Undyed (natural cream color) and Hand Dyed variations of this popular fabric. I hand dye all of my OBV myself using professional grade dyes.

OBV is Sustainable, Hypoallergenic, Breathable, Vegan Friendly, and Super Absorbent, which makes it a great choice for anyone! Because it is a natural fiber, it is prone to staining, so an extra rinse in cool water right after use is advised.

OBF has the same wonderful qualities of OBV, but a smooth top, rather than a short pile velour. It also takes the dyes slightly different than OBV, resulting in beautiful dye patterns that look almost like a water painting. I use OBF exclusively for the absorbent cores of my pads.

Like OBV, OBF is also available in both Undyed (natural cream color) and Hand Dyed colors.

OBJ features all of the same characteristics of OBV & OBF, but has a feel similar to your favorite t-shirt that you’ve had for years. Super soft and very thin, OBJ is great for Pantyliners and 8” Light pads, when you are looking for a nice thin pad.

Just as luxurious as its Bamboo sisters, but in rich solid colors, Cotton Velour is a must for any stash. It’s soft, absorbent, and Vegan friendly too!

Cotton Velour is a natural fiber and can stain. Like the Bamboo fabrics I offer, I advise rinsing pads made with CV in cool water right after use to help minimize staining.

Thin and colorful, Cotton Woven fabrics are a great choice for ladies who’s first priority is having the thinnest pad possible. It’s a wonderful choice for pantyliners - especially for ladies that live in warmer climates as they feel cool to the skin. Cotton Wovens are breathable and Vegan Friendly too!

Cotton Wovens, like other natural fibers can stain. A quick, cold water rinse after use will help minimize staining.

Raw Silk is a wonderful, soothing option for ladies who are affected by Yeast Infections. Raw Silk contains Sericin, which is a naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal protein that is given off from the Silk Worms. Pantyliners made with Raw Silk are also very thin and perfect for Everyday.

Raw Silk is a natural fiber and can stain. Like the other natural fiber fabrics I offer, I advise rinsing pantyliners made with Raw Silk in cool water right after use to help minimize staining.

My most popular choice for the backs of both pads and liners! WindPro Fleece is professional quality and water resistant, making it a wonderful choice for a reliable, long lasting cloth pad. All this and breathable too!

Offered occasionally on both Cloth Pads and Nursing Pads, Wool Interlock is a wonderful choice for ladies that prefer a natural backing for their pads. Wool is breathable and absorbent, so it adds additional absorbency to your stash as well.
